At Wilderness (August 2015)
What’s the point of mindfulness?
Is mindfulness just a pleasant way of relaxing or can it help you live your life as the person you want to be? How does getting in touch with your toes help you get in touch with yourself? And how do you know if you’re getting in touch with yourself if you’re not sure who you are? These are just some of the questions that will be covered in conversation with psychologist Dr Nina Burrowes, author of The Little Book on Authenticity (as part of our mindfulness series), also known as the ‘cartooning psychologist’.

Be the Person You Want to Be
Do you know who you really are? Are you living your life as the person you want to be or as the person you are expected to be? Join psychologist, author, illustrator and speaker Dr. Nina Burrowes for an evening of working out who you would like to be, and how to find the courage to be that person.
This workshop will help you to:
- Find out why being you is an active choice, why choosing yourself can be so difficult and why being authentic is more interesting than simply revealing yourself to others
- Explore your values and learn the difference between useful and limiting values
- Discover how to narrow the gap between the person you are now and the person you would like to be
2 Minute Interview
How do your workshops with NOW Live Events relate to being in the moment?
One of the things that can get in the way of being in the moment is you. Your head can take you off into all sorts of places – problems to think about, things to do, stuff that happened yesterday… And on top of all of that it can question what you’re up to. What’s the point on focusing on now? This session is about the head stuff of being in the moment – why it makes sense, why it’s important, and why our heads aren’t as smart as they’d like to think they are.
What are you most looking forward to doing within your NOW Live Events slot?
I’m looking forward to the dance. It often feels like being in the moment is a dance between then and now, here and there. A dance between my mind and where it wants to wander, and my body and what it’s telling me. A dance between over-intellectualising something and finding a story that your mind can be happy with. The event will be about getting that balance – which I find both challenging and fun.
Any tips on how the audience can best benefit from your workshop with NOW Live Events?
Bring everything. Your body and how it’s feeling. Your mind. Your thoughts. Your acceptance and resistance. It’s all welcome. If you are fully signed up to the idea of focusing on the present moment this event is for you. If you think that focusing on the present moment is at best a waste of time this event is also for you.
