The Mindfulness Exchange Ltd is a spin-off from the Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC), set up to deliver mindfulness training based on cognitive science to the workplace. Mark Leonard has been involved in developing the OMC since it was established in 2008. Mark taught the first training programmes using Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World by Mark Williams and Danny Penman as a course book for both Oxford students and corporate clients.
2 Minute Interview:
How do your workshops and talk at NOW Festival relate to being in the moment?
Mindfulness is our natural ability to be aware of what is happening from moment to moment. Buddhist have taught simple exercises to do this for thousands of years. Now science is understanding how this works and there is an explosion of interest in mindfulness for this reason.
What are you most looking forward to doing within your NOW Festival slot?
What isn’t happening now? There is only the present moment, it’s just we get caught up in worrying, planning and daydreaming and we end up getting disconnected from our loved ones and the pleasure, rawness and wonder of this precious life. It’s all very well to say we need to be present to experience life but how do we learn to focus on each moment and tame our monkey minds? Teaching mindfulness is so rewarding because it gives people a taste of freedom from the tyranny of living in a frantic world. Just think what would happen when more and more people live their lives rather than being caught up in fears and fantasies of what will make them happy?
Do you have any tips on how the audience can best benefit from your workshops and talk at NOW Festival?
The Mindfulness Exchange (TME) uses, Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World, by Professor Mark Wiliams and Dr Danny Penman as a resource book. This book is easy to read and based on up to date scientific understanding of mindfulness and it’s benefits. The book comes with a cd with guided meditations that anyone can use. You will also find free downloadable guided meditations from www.mindfulness-exchange.com to continue practicing midnfulness in your daily life.
At NOW Festival (Secret Garden Party & Wilderness):
