NOW are delighted to be back at Wilderness Festival from 6 – 9 August this year, encouraging us to bring our busy brains back to the present moment. Designed to make us ditch our phones, forget our stresses and stimulate our senses, our refreshing menu of artistic activities includes our first ever ‘mindfulness feast’, an exclusive mindful running event and celebrations of theatre, literature, meditation, dance, visual arts and other enticing ways to experience the NOW. This year we explore how we can tap into our creative potential through mindfulness.

Speakers include singer-songwriter and actor Will YoungDr. Tamara Russell – mindfulness expert, author, martial artist, neuroscientist, Nic Marks – world renowned wellbeing expert whose TED talk created a worldwide sensation, Janey Lee Grace – broadcaster and author known to over 8 million listeners via BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright show, Suzy Greaves – editor of Psychologies Magazine, and Jules Evans – philosopher and writer. The arts programme includes activities from mindful photography (without a camera) to parenting and wild swimming in the Wilderness lake.

Chronophone – What Would you Say to your Future Self? – UNSWORN INDUSTRIES

Chronophone is a telephone service that allows people to call themselves – one year from now. Rooted in the here and now, the Chronophone asks you to consider your future self and the journey from the present to exactly 365 days from now.

 

Friday 7 August

10:00am 

Wake Up NOW! – MEG SAUNDERS 

This morning movement session will focus on awakening and preparing the body for the day ahead. We will focus on weight and centring oneself through gravity and flow leading towards a more energised state of moving, leaving with our feet firmly planted on the ground, spines long and heads reaching towards the sky.

He Ain’t Heavy… – ALASTAIR CREAMER

How can we find fresh and inspiring ways to help others, and in doing so, find out more about who we really are? Championing being truly present to those around us, we will be releasing what is within us for the benefit of the world, promoting creative tools to inspire generous living in the moment through action.

Awaken Your Senses –BITTERSUITE  

A workshop run by multi-sensory collective BitterSuite sharing their own devising practices, exploring the instinctual and naturally therapeutic character of sensory arts, developing a mindful approach to life that lasts forever.

Mindfulness for Kids & Parents – THE INSIDE OUT

INSIDE OUT is a self-development programme for young children (ages 7-11) grounded in the science of happiness, the wonder of nature and the art of mindfulness. By inspiring children to be happy inside and out, they are more likely to fulfill their potential and grow into happy adults. And learn better too.

What’s the Point of Mindfulness? – DR. NINA BURROWES

Is mindfulness just a pleasant way of relaxing or can it help you live your life as the person you want to be? Join Founder of NOW Live Events, Jana Stefanovska & psychologist Dr Nina Burrowes, author of The Little Book on Authenticity, also known as the ‘cartooning psychologist’.

Mindful Movement – THE ART OF MINDFULNESS

The Art of Mindfulness is a project dedicated to inspiring Mindfulness in everyday life. Neuroscientist, martial artist and pioneering Mindfulness expert Dr. Tamara Russell will lead you through a series of mindful movements based on tai chi and martial arts practices – integrating both body and mind for a deeply rewarding meditative experience.

Using Mindfulness to Find Your Voice, Boundaries and Your True Self – WILL YOUNG

According to singer-songwriter & actor Will Young, the use of our voice is much more than a physical act – it is a creative and direct way to express our identity and our true self while reclaiming our boundaries. Join Will to hear about his journey into mindfulness and learn techniques to explore your identity through the voice and body.

The Unlympics – fanSHEN

This family-friendly session takes familiar events and turns them upside down and inside out to playfully question whether being the biggest, fastest, strongest really is what we’re after. Events include the 100 metres Slowest Running and Strictly Come Tiniest Dancing. Practise your focusing skills in a whole new way.

The Wild Imagination Challenge – THE MASKETEERS

Lose yourself in a mask making challenge set by The Masketeers, using your intuition and creative mind to let your imagination run wild. Build a three dimensional mask with  a treasure trove of colours and textures. Find out what the mask reveals about you and then head into the Wilderness…

Transformational Portraiture  MATT NIGHTINGALE

Join artist Matt Nightingale to explore how you see your “self” in the past, present and future.  How have past events impacted your present? How do you see yourself in the future? Picture yourself as the person you want to be… All ages welcome.

How to Breathe Yourself Better – MICHAEL TOWNSEND-WILLIAMS

When you get the right balance in life you can do amazing things: create, perform, lead a team, raise a family. But so often the scales tip and we feel overwhelmed and stressed. Adman turned yoga teacher, Michael Townsend Williams advocates ‘welldoing’ – leading a busy and productive life, but not at the expense of our health and wellbeing. And key to this is our breath.

Improvised Morning Wake Up Call – SEKE CHIMUTENGWENDE

Join Seke and friends for a series of morning warm-up sessions, followed by moments of improvised performance dotted around the Wilderness landscape. Seke’s morning sessions are an opportunity to wake up the body and mind through stimulating improvisation exercises that will leave you feeling fully grounded and ready for the day ahead.

Simon Cohen’s Living Room Creativity – SIMON COHEN

Creativity is usually a buzzword for the workplace. In your professional life, you innovate, tackle banality, and when you get home, you tackle the fridge and the latest box set. In Simon Cohen’s Living Room Creativity, you will explore how home-based innovation can open new doors to mindfulness through storytelling and play.

Mindful Running – SARAH WAITE

Somehow, in the journey out West, meditation and mindfulness lost some of its active, playful nature. The truth is you don’t have to sit still in silence to meditate – meditation can be exciting and energising too. But don’t take our word for it; let us show you with a magical run around Cornbury Park Estate.

We would all like to surf the waves of life’s challenges. Mindfulness offers a surfboard to ride those waves with your eyes open, mind clear and body relaxed – a wonderful foundation for parenting. Explore how we can be more aware through experiments in speaking, listening, colour, senses, movement and sitting like a frog (3+).

NOW is the events partner of Psychologies Magazine, the thinking woman’s magazine. Join Suzy Greaves, Psychologies editor in conversation with Janey Lee Grace, author and broadcaster on BBC Radio 2, exploring how to live an imperfect life – and love it. How do you embrace imperfection and love your life as it is right here, right now?

‘Choreogeography’ – ALEX REUBEN
(Meet at the NOW Dome)

Filmmaker Alex Reuben creates works characterised by improvisation, sound and movement – a process he calls ‘choreogeography’. Alex will combine his interests in walking and psychogeography to invite participants to join him on a walking tour of the Wilderness site, exploring the area where movement, film and philosophy meet.

Happier Ways of Living – NIC MARKS

Sometimes finding happiness can seem elusive but recent psychological research is uncovering new (and old) ways of becoming happier.  Renowned happiness and wellbeing researcher Nic Marks will introduce five happier ways of living that – while being based on modern science – could just as easily come from ancient spiritual texts.

Have you ever wished you could go back to seeing the world as you did when you were a child? Join 9 year old artist Freya Nightingale to remember what it’s like to draw from your child-like imagination, becoming open to the wonder of life. Explore the possibilities of your mind right NOW.

Singing in the Moment – AMPERSAND MEDIA

Does singing give you the absolute fear? Would you like to sing with abandon in the middle of a field in the same way you do whilst pottering at home? Come and join in a joyous session of making up tuneful noise in the moment.

A History of Relaxation – GUERILLA SCIENCE

Take a deep breath… and relax…ease into the history of therapeutic relaxation with cultural historian of medicine Ayesha Nathoo, and event producers Guerilla Science. Hear how the idea of relaxation for health and wellbeing has changed over the last century, including practical techniques from yoga, meditation and physiotherapy.

Craftivist’s Garden – CRAFTIVIST COLLECTIVE

Craftivist Collective’s founder Sarah Corbett presents a session about craft as a meditative tool to stop, reflect and act on wellbeing in a transformative and gentle way. This embroidery workshop can help improve wellbeing by involving you in the fun, connected, sensory and mindful process of making things.

This session offers an opportunity to stop and think about taking pictures – WITHOUT a camera in our hands.  Think differently about your photography, by being more present as you take pictures, with tips to sharpen your senses.

Refresh: Writing Through the Change – SIMON MOLE

Times of transition can be both hugely exciting and deeply disturbing, but with change as the only constant, it is an area ripe for creative exploration. Take part in a relaxed but thought provoking session using free-writing and poetry to explore our responses to change and transition. For beginners and more experienced writers alike.

Paul and his colleague Chloe Foy host a workshop based on Paul’s bestselling book, ‘Happiness by Design’ including research into behavioural science together with the current evidence on happiness to create a new pursuit. Our happiness is a combination of experiences of pleasure and purpose over time and depends on how we allocate our attention.

Enjoy the opportunity to rest in your senses, exploring mindful seeing, hearing, tasting and body sensing. With fuller awareness we can enjoy the landscape of sound, colour, texture and aroma while jumping into the Wilderness lake with wild abandon…

The Art of Mindfulness in Everyday Life – DR. TAMARA RUSSELL

Join neuroscientist, clinical psychologist and leading mindfulness expert Dr. Tamara Russell with an approach that takes mindfulness off the cushion and into the real world – a mixture of brain science, martial arts theory, psychology and practical exercises.

Is There Such a Thing as Western Contemplation? – JULES EVANS

As mindfulness spreads through UK culture with all the ferocity of the grey squirrel, we explore the indigenous traditions of contemplation, and why they disappeared from widespread Christian contemplation in the Middle Ages and contemplative knitting  to how the mystic tradition evolved and took new forms, particularly in poetry.

Back to the Body: A Movement Experience – KIMBERLEY PENA

The only thing harder than letting go is moving on… As the wonders of Wilderness draw to an end, Dance Movement Psychotherapist Kimberley Pena offers space to bring your mind home to your body, before your body returns home.

 

 

A Mindful Feast With Anna Jones and Tamara Russell

Anna JonesAnna JonesEver been guilty of inhaling your lunch at your desk? How often do you actually taste your food, savouring every mouthful, experiencing the flavours, textures, smells and using all of your senses in the process? Chef Anna Jones and Dr. Tamara Russell will take you through their take on eating and mindfulness in the kitchen. Each guest will make dishes from Anna’s plant based recipes while discussing the importance of how we eat as well what we eat. Guests will work in pairs to create amazing summer dishes and treats to feast on, exploring which memories and associations it evokes in us, where the food comes from and its journey to the plate.
